Pastors And Churches Violating First Commandment

Regardless of doctrine or denomination, America’s pastors and churches are noted for teaching various dos and don’ts to their congregations. Obviously, most churches, regardless of denomination, subscribe to and teach the Ten Commandments. And, depending on the church and pastor, they can even get extremely detailed and lengthy in the don’t department–including many taboos not covered in Moses’ Decalogue. Don’t wear these clothes. Don’t listen to this music. Don’t shop at these stores. Don’t wear this hairstyle. Don’t associate with these people. Don’t miss church. Don’t fail to give your tithes and offerings. Don’t drink this beverage. Don’t abandon this program. Don’t have these attitudes, etc., etc.

And as a pastor who has been in the Gospel ministry for over 40 years, I also try to be faithful to those principles of Scripture that deal with the negative. Albeit, I hasten to say that I refuse to join the many pastors today who are as guilty as the Pharisees of old in the way they teach the traditions and doctrines of men as being synonymous with the teaching of Holy Writ–which they are NOT.

In fact, the Pharisees were the bane of Jesus’ earthy life and ministry. They were the constant thorn in his side: they rejected his authority; they harassed and harangued him; they constantly tried to incite crowds against him; they ridiculed him; they denigrated his parents; they scorned the place where he lived; they laughed at him; they led conspiracies against him; they repeatedly tried to kill him; and, finally, they crucified him. The Pharisees saw Jesus as a threat to their doctrines, their synagogues, their schools of higher learning, their politics, and, mostly, their position and authority. And he was!

If there is any single doctrine that has been universally taught throughout Church history–regardless of denomination–it is the authority of Jesus Christ. The position and authority of Christ above his church has been the most fundamental, most basic doctrine for 2,000 years of Christendom. This is the single doctrine that separates Christian believers from religious impostors, typified by the Pharisees of old. Agree or disagree on myriads of doctrines, this doctrine reigns supreme: Christ is the Sovereign Lord.

I submit that, wittingly or unwittingly, a great host of pastors and churches today have all but lost sight of this most significant and foundational doctrine. Like the Pharisees of old, their man-made traditions–and political connections to secular power–have supplanted the sovereignty of Christ over their lives and over their churches.

The Pharisees knew they were subjects of Rome, and they assisted their Roman overlords in keeping the people in subjection. As a result, the Pharisees had a very profitable and cozy relationship with Caesar’s Roman Empire. They enjoyed great financial benefits from cooperating with the Roman government and were given great latitude by Rome to govern the Jewish people. They had the power of disbarment, persecution, arrest, and incarceration. They had virtually unlimited power over the people. About the only power they did not have without Rome’s consent was the power of crucifixion.

Pastors today who say that Jesus never challenged civil government don’t know what they are talking about. The Pharisees were as much a part of the civil government of Rome as they were a spiritual authority of Judaism. In fact, they were the direct authority of Rome over Judea. By challenging the authority of the Pharisees, Jesus was challenging the authority of Rome. The Pharisees–and everyone else–understood it. That’s what the question of the Roman penny was all about. And that’s why the Pharisees accused Jesus of being a traitor to Caesar (civil government) before Pilate. And that’s why the Pharisees hated Jesus: he dared to challenge their authority–civil and spiritual.

Jesus is the Sovereign Lord. When the Pharisees accused him of breaking the Sabbath, he reminded them that he is Lord even over the Sabbath. He proved himself to be the Lord over sickness and disease, over the wind and waves, even over death and hell. And when he challenged the authority of the Pharisees, Christ was showing that he was Lord over the lives of his people in relationship to the church AND THE STATE. Jesus said, “All power (authority) is given unto me in heaven and in earth.” Christ Jesus is the one true Sovereign–the ONLY one true Sovereign. And, again, this has been the foundation of Christianity for over 2,000 years.

In fact, the entire history of the early church in the Book of Acts is the story of how believers refused to surrender the authority of Christ to any human authority–including civil government. The man who wrote Romans 13 (the Apostle Paul) spent about as much time behind bars as he did free. Who incarcerated him? Civil government. Why? Because he refused to surrender the authority of Christ to their authority. That’s the redundant history of the Church from the Apostle Paul to John Hus, John Wycliffe, Savonarola, John Bunyan, and America’s patriot pastors such as Jonas Clark and James Caldwell.

But what do we hear from most pastors and churches today? “Romans 13 says to obey the civil government no matter what,” or words to that effect. Conveniently, this heresy began becoming popular after churches were brought under the authority of the state with the introduction of the 501c3 tax-exempt status back in 1954. Try to deny it all you want, but when a church submits to the authority of the IRS 501c3 tax-exempt status, it has surrendered the authority of Christ and replaced it with the authority of civil government. This is not unlike the way in which the Pharisees of old submitted to the authority of Caesar.

And the manifestation of this idolatry is observed in many ways. Listen to these actual statements made by pastors just recently:

“If government troops or policemen came to my home to rape my wife, Romans 13 says I cannot interfere.”

“If Jesus were on the earth today, he would do anything President Bush told him to do.” (I wonder if this pastor believes Jesus would do anything Barack Obama told him to do. He probably does.)

“To not obey civil government is to not obey God.”

“America’s Founding Fathers sinned when they rebelled against the British Crown.”

I could recite quotations such as these just about forever. How did this come about? How did our pastors and churches become such slaves to the state? A big reason is the church’s acceptance of the 501c3 non-profit tax-exempt status.

And since pastors and churches now believe they must surrender to the lordship of the state, they are content to ignore the great Biblical principles that relate to our political lives. Here is what the 501c3 tax code says (taken from the official IRS website):

“Under the Internal Revenue Code, all section 501(c)(3) organizations are absolutely prohibited from directly or indirectly participating in, or intervening in, any political campaign on behalf of (or in opposition to) any candidate for elective public office. Contributions to political campaign funds or public statements of position (verbal or written) made on behalf of the organization in favor of or in opposition to any candidate for public office clearly violate the prohibition against political campaign activity.  Violating this prohibition may result in denial or revocation of tax-exempt status and the imposition of certain excise taxes.”

The Restriction Of Political Campaign Intervention By Section 501(c)(3) Tax-Exempt Organizations

Do you want to know why pastors will not speak out against the evil practices, policies, and pontifications of our elected civil magistrates? It is the fear of violating the 501c3 statute and thereby risk losing the precious government benefit of tax exemption. Is not this tantamount to what the Pharisees did? They rejected the authority of Christ for fear of losing the benefits of Caesar.

As this column already sounds preachy to my non-Christian readers, I will go ahead and quote this passage from John 11:48: “If we [the Pharisees] let him [Christ] thus alone, all men will believe on him: and the Romans shall come and take away both our place and our nation.”

Apply this verse to many of today’s pastors: “If we preach Christ alone, the government in Washington, D.C., will come and take away our tax exempt status and our position and benefits.”

Watch this: the Pharisees rejected the person and authority of Christ for fear of the retribution of Rome. And some thirty-plus years after rejecting Christ, the Romans came in 70 A.D. and completely destroyed the Pharisees as an institution, their synagogue, their power, their riches, everything–just as Jesus predicted in Matthew 24.

I submit that these pastors–just as the Pharisees of old–who are rejecting the sovereign authority of Christ and bowing to the authority of Caesar (civil government) will, themselves, lose everything at the hands of the idol (civil government) to whom they so willingly submitted.

Thank God, many ministers and laymen alike are awakening to the idolatry of subjecting the Lord’s Church to the shackles and tyranny of the 501c3 tax code. More and more of the Lord’s people are seeking to escape from these government churches and are looking for real men of God who will not submit Christ’s authority to the state.

Accordingly, I have launched the Liberty Church Project in an attempt to help ministers and laymen establish non-501c3 churches and Christian fellowships. We will also be helping existing 501c3 churches become a free church. The early response is incredible! We are right now in the process of scheduling meetings all over the country.

Another exciting feature of this project is that we are having pastors who, themselves, want to become the shepherds of non-501c3 churches telling us, “I am willing to relocate to an area where Christian people want a pastor to help them build a non-501c3 church.” We have several such pastors right now who are willing to relocate to an area where people desire to have an independent, non-501c3 church.

It’s one thing to curse the cowardice of the government churches. It’s another thing to band together with fellow patriot-Christians and ministers and help build a liberty church, totally free from the shackles of the 501c3 leviathan. Yes, it will take work; and this is not a task for the careless and insincere.

But for those who are serious-minded and can put together a group of like-minded folks to help, I have a team of people in place; I have the materials; I have the ability and opportunity to travel across the nation and help people start and build liberty churches. So, if you are a disciple of the Lord Jesus, and you are tired of the government pastors and churches who refuse to take a stand, the Liberty Church Project is here to help you.

The first step is to go to the website and fill out the online application. That starts the process. It is a detailed application; and it is intended only for those folks who take this task seriously. It is a serious commitment for me and for the folks who are helping me. It must be equally serious for the folks who are asking us to come help them.

However, I am convinced that what is now but a trickle of water in a parched and dusty land will soon turn into a flood of spiritual renewal as the church is set free from the chains of state bondage. Folks, the answer will never come from the White House, no matter which party occupies it, but from the church house, where the Spirit of the living God resides.

If you, and a group of likeminded folks, seriously desire a non-501c3 church, please fill out the online application. If you are a minister who would like to shepherd a non-501c3 church, fill out the online application. If you are a pastor of an establishment church and want help restoring the patriot pulpit and liberty church, fill out the application.

The online application is found here:

Plus, I encourage you to keep an eye on the Liberty Church Project website for the dates and places of where we will be visiting, in case we may be coming to a location near you. We also have a growing list of people who are looking for a non-501c3 church in their area. You can add your location to the list, as well.

With all of the dos and don’ts that our churches are teaching these days, it’s time that they start shouting from the rooftops this most fundamental of all commands, “Thou shalt have no other gods before me.” And that includes the god of civil government.

Ferguson: A Preview Of America’s Burgeoning Police State

Even America’s smallest towns can be instantly turned into occupied territories as local police agencies quickly transform themselves from peacekeepers into occupying military forces. The small town of Ferguson, Missouri, is living proof of that.

The London Guardian covers the story:

“Michael Brown was shot dead by an officer from a police force of 53, serving a population of just 21,000. But the police response to a series of protests over his death has been something more akin to the deployment of an army in a miniature warzone.

“Ferguson police have deployed stun grenades, rubber bullets and what appear to be 40mm wooden baton rounds to quell the protests in a show of force that is a stark illustration of the militarization of police forces in the US.

“‘I’m a soldier, I’m a military officer and I know when there’s a need for such thing, but I don’t think in a small town of 22,000 people you need up-armor vehicles,’ Cristian Balan, a communications officer in the US army, who was not speaking on behalf of the US military, told the Guardian. ‘Even if there’s an active shooter–are you really going to use an up-armor vehicle? Do you really need it?’

“In the eyes of the government, the answer increasingly seems to be a resounding yes.

“Since 2006, state and local law enforcement have acquired at least 435 armored vehicles, 533 military aircraft and 93,763 machine guns, according to an investigation by the New York Times published in June. This was made possible under a department of defense program that allows the agency to transfer excess military property to US law enforcement agencies. More than $4.3bn worth of gear has been transferred since the program was created in 1997, according to the Law Enforcement Support Office (LESO).

“The ACLU said there are no ‘meaningful constraints’ to what a local police force could acquire, meaning that even a 10,000 person town with no history of major violence could request and receive a mine-resistant vehicle, like those that are currently available on the LESO site.”

The report continued saying, “The increasing militarization of US police is also attributed to the skyrocketing proliferation of Swat teams across the US. There has been a more than 1400% increase in the amount of Swat deployments between 1980 and 2000, according to estimates by Eastern Kentucky University professor Peter Kraska.”

The report also said, “‘As we’ve seen in Ferguson, the militarization of policing tends to escalate the risk of violence to the communities,’ said Kara Dansky, senior counsel with the ACLU’s Center for Justice and the prime author of its June 2014 report on the militarization of US police. ‘We think that historically, the police and the military have had different roles and that American neighborhoods aren’t war zones and police officers should not be treating us like wartime enemies.’”

Ferguson Police: A Stark Illustration Of Newly Militarised US Law Enforcement

Indeed, the militarization of U.S. police agencies has been escalating for decades. Can anyone remember when federal police and U.S. military personnel collaborated to slaughter scores of American citizens outside Waco, Texas, in 1993, and when federal police agents assassinated American citizens at Ruby Ridge, Idaho, in 1992? These two episodes are a blight on American justice, an affront on the constitutional rule of law, and the worst kind of insult to the American conscience. And, notice, it did not matter one bit whether a Democrat or Republican was in the White House. A Republican (George H.W. Bush) was President when government agents murdered the Weavers at Ruby Ridge; and a Democrat (Bill Clinton) was President when federal agents and military troops murdered the Branch Davidians.

Those two events seemed to be the catalyst for the emerging American Police State. But it was the creation of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the implementation of the PATRIOT Act under G.W. Bush that has propelled the police-state mentality throughout America’s heartland.

As noted in the Guardian report above, the Pentagon has been turning local police agencies into quasi-military units for decades. And the DHS is routinely supplying police-state style training for practically every local police agency in the United States–and has been for years.

And when it comes to the two major parties in Washington, D.C., the Republican Party has been the most aggressive in the creation of the American Police State. In the name of “law and order” and “national security,” conservative Republican legislators and Presidents have enacted a multitude of laws abridging the protections of liberty contained in the Bill of Rights. For all intents and purposes, the two administrations of G.W. Bush, coupled with six long years of the Republican Party controlling the entire federal government (2001-2006), virtually expunged most of the Bill of Rights. In fact, everything that President Barack Obama is now utilizing to abridge constitutional liberties was handed to him on a silver platter by G.W. Bush and his fellow neocon Republicans in Washington, D.C. And if Montanans send the quintessential neocon, Ryan Zinke, to Congress this fall (and other states do likewise), America’s collapse into a Police State will accelerate even faster.

There are two things that neocon Republicans love: foreign wars abroad and a Police State at home. And, sadly, it seems that a majority of America’s conservative Christians are right there with them.

If America’s pastors would start taking a stand against this burgeoning Police State, it would die almost instantly. But when is the last time you heard your pastor say one word of protest against the way our policemen are being turned into soldiers? When has he said a peep about the abridgment of our Bill of Rights by these power-hungry, would-be tyrants from both parties in Washington, D.C.? Under Presidents Bush I, Clinton, Bush II, and Obama, the right of Habeas Corpus, the 4th Amendment, 5th Amendment, 6th Amendment, 7th Amendment, and 8th Amendment are, for all intents and purposes, eviscerated. Kaput! Gone! Wiped out! And the vast majority of our good pastors have not said one word–not one word!

You see this silent, passive pastor as a good man; you believe him to be kind and compassionate; you think he is godly and sincere. But, by his silence, he is helping to put the chains of tyranny around the necks of your children and grandchildren. By his silence, he is facilitating the collapse of America into a Police State as surely as the sun sets in the west. This is not godliness; it is cowardice!

The founder of Lutheranism, Martin Luther, is credited with saying, “If I profess with the loudest voice and clearest exposition every portion of the truth of God except precisely that little point which the world and the devil are at that moment attacking, I am not confessing Christ, however boldly I may be professing Christ. Where the battle rages there the loyalty of the soldier is proved. And to be steady on all the battlefields besides is merely flight and disgrace if he flinches at that point.”

Ladies and gentlemen, where the battle rages–and the point at which the world and the devil are at this moment attacking–is the creation of an American Police State (as well as the invasion of criminals and potential terrorists across our southern border, of course). Therefore, if your pastor is not on the battlefield at this point, he is not “confessing Christ” and has fled his post and disgraced his calling.

The Boston Marathon bombing brought out Gestapo-like tactics of the Boston police. Now, the little town of Ferguson, Missouri, has been subjected to the same thing. And now that the U.S. Justice Department has sent hundreds of federal agents to Ferguson, one can only imagine the kind of martial law and abridgments to personal liberties that will be enacted. One Democrat U.S. Congressman is already calling for martial law. Yes, the Feinstein/Schumer wing of the Democrat Party loves the Police State, as well.

Realize this, my friends, what we saw take place at Waco, Ruby Ridge, Boston (and in hundreds of obscure places all over the country), and now Ferguson is a preview of America’s burgeoning Police State.

Are people with pure political agendas such as Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, et al. taking advantage of the situation in Ferguson? You bet! Are race-baiters taking advantage of Ferguson? Without a doubt. And I strongly suspect that the federal government is using paid provocateurs to further inflame the situation and give the federal government an opportunity to impose federal intervention in the area. Regardless, the escalation of an American Police State is undeniable; and the American people had better start paying attention.

This is not a Republican or Democrat issue; it is not a liberal or conservative issue; it is not a black or white issue; it is not a Christian or secular issue. It is a liberty or slavery issue! A freedom mindset and a police-state mindset cannot coexist. They cannot! We will either have one of the other. The American people better make up their minds quickly which one it will be, because, if we do nothing, our very own and very real Police State is just around the corner.
